These backdrops were created and rendered out in five different positions to match the positions of the live action performance. These were composited in afterwards, replacing the 3D clay models shown here that were used for reference. A special pass was also rendered so that some elements could pass in front of the live action.

The Brief
This is actually a lot more detailed than some of the briefs I receive. Typically I’ll ask for a mood board of images or inspiration that a client will invariably have. On a very open brief, that’s something I can do for them too. With that in place it’s time to start making stuff look good.

Compositing
This is the guide that was used to locate the digital scene so that it would match the filmed footage of the actors exactly. The camera positions and focal lengths were recreated in 3D to match digital with reality precisely.

Working in 3D
All of the 3D renders come from one huge island asset and all of it's different locations. A challange to manage and organize but all of that complexity leads to rich and immersive results.
