I was inspired by a particular shot in Apple TV's Friends and Neighbours where Jon Hamm's Maserati drifts around a corner, closes on the camera and races away. What if it was an F1 car? And really dig into the slow motion on the wheel with bits of rubber crumb and water spray flying off... challenge accepted.

I sourced the car from TurboSquid and the cityscape is built up from Kitbash 3D assets. Then it became an exercise in lighting and animation. This is when 3D is most fun, hunting around for a feeling. I tuned into this Miami at dawn vibe which gave me some beautiful light to work with, and waving palm trees of course. As soon as I tried some reflections on the road I had to have water in there so I leaned into that stormy aesthetic, adding spray and vapour with Embergen.

In the Garage
First task was to re-work the F1 car and driver for Redshift and then I set the model to work with C4D's Character animation rig. That gave me full control over the motion of the car without having to worry about wheels rotating or turning.

I didn't need to build all of Miami, just a few buildings to keep the shot filled. Using Google Maps I grabbed a reference from the Dingle Dell corner of Brands Hatch, knowing that would define the correct speed and size of road for the type of shot I wanted. Scale and accuracy always.
